As well as office lighting designs we have carried out many surveys and reports into whether or not the lighting in a building has met the H & S Workplace Regulations or Display Screen Regulations. Paul Ruffles has recently rewritten the Society of Light & Lighting’s Office Lighting Guide, LG7 and was Chairman of the Task Group that wrote the CIBSE/SLL Lighting Guide LG3 ‘The visual environment for display screen use’. See the site www.LG7.info for additional information on LG7.
National Trust Headquarters, Swindon
We provided specialist lighting design advice to the architects and engineers involved in this new environmentally friendly building. This included public areas, external spaces and special purpose areas such as the photo-library, atria and meeting rooms.
Fullwood House, Cheltenham
This is the Directorate building for the Cheltenham & Gloucester College which was completely refurbished and refitted during 2000. We designed special lighting systems for the board room and conference suite. We tailored the office lighting to the varying needs of the Directors and the support staff. Decorative as well as functional lighting was provided for the public spaces and circulation routes.
Inmarsat HQ, London
This modern head quarters building needed changes to the existing lighting and daylight control systems to improve user comfort and to help ensure compliance with the Display Screen Regulations. Area use varied from open plan to cellular with special equipment rooms, satellite control rooms and presentation areas. Our lighting recommendations varied from area to area and included changes to controls, luminaires and use of task lighting.
Nonsuch House, Trowbridge
This three story office building for a financial services group is a listed building in the heart of Trowbridge. The accommodation consisted of public reception and consultation rooms as well as the private office accommodation. Unusual room heights and shapes as well as retained historic features added to the character of the spaces created.
Compucenter, Hatfield
This new office and distribution centre outside Hatfield had a large multi-story atrium spanning between two office wings. The atrium formed the main entrance and reception to the building and had walkways spanning across the space at three levels with glass walled lift shafts connecting them.
The lighting needed to be both dramatic and functional. The various views up and across the space meant that positioning the lights was important if unacceptable glare was to be avoided. The full-height glass front and back walls also allowed for some unusual night-time lighting effects.
Welcome Trust, London
The Welcome Trust occupies a number of buildings along the Euston Road in London. These vary from the historic head quarters building to modern office blocks and specialist archive and book store building.
We carried out a comprehensive survey of the existing lighting systems in the various buildings before making recommendations about changes and upgrades to the lighting. The comfort and health of the workforce were uppermost in the mind of the client in commissioning this exercise.
