Paul Ruffles

Paul Ruffles has been the principal of Lighting Design & Technology since founding the practice in 1992. Throughout his career he has contributed to the organising and administering of his profession both through his work with the Engineering Institutions and through National and International bodies. These have included the National Illumination Committee, the International Standards Organisation, Lux Europa and the British Standards Organisation. Paul is a Past-President of the Society of Light and Lighting (when called the CIBSE Lighting Division) which represents the interests of most of the senior members of the lighting profession.

Paul originally trained with the consultants Ove Arup & Partners in London. There he followed a comprehensive graduate training programme which included a four months secondment to Thorn Lighting, to study product development, laboratory testing, lamp technology and manufacture, and a four months secondment to Balfour Kilpatric, an electrical contractor, to learn about estimating, site installation and commissioning of lighting and related electrical systems. This training provided a sound basis upon which he has built his wide lighting knowledge and practice.

Paul went on to work for Steensen Varming Mulcahy and Partners as a lighting designer working on various museum, office and commercial developments. He moved on to Oscar Faber and partners in 1985 to become a Senior then Principal Engineer in charge of a number of large scale M & E design projects including the ICI Headquarters and the Express Newspapers head offices in London.

In 1988 Paul moved to Buro Happold in Bath as an Associate Partner where he ran a building design group as well as the lighting group. His projects included The Holiday Inn, Kensington and a new visitors’ centre for Kew Gardens. He provided lighting support to Buro Happold’s offices in London, Leeds and Saudi Arabia.

Paul has written many lighting related articles in all sections of the professional lighting press. He also makes numerous presentations to technical conferences and to learned society meetings.
