Paul Ruffles

BSc, CEng, FSLL, FCIBSE, MIEE, holder of the CIBSE Lighting Diploma.

1992 Formed own practice: Lighting Design & Technology. Recent projects include work for: Wallace Collection, London; Railtrack, London; The Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; Swiss Bank Corporation, London; The Gulbenkian Museum, Lisbon; The Wellcome Trust Headquarters, London; Waddesdon Manor, Aylesbury; Inmarsat Headquarters, London; Rochdale Arts and Heritage Centre; Palace of Westminster; Prudential Portfolio Managers; Chemical Bank; University of Buckingham; British Embassy, Paris.

1988 Principal Engineer then in 1989 an Associate with Buro Happold Consulting Engineers. Lighting and Electrical designs included the Assembly Rooms, Bath; the Guildhall, Bath; a new visitors centre for Kew Gardens and Greenwich Cinema. Lighting design schemes for British Rail, Gatwick; St Augustine’s Church, London; Petworth House, Surrey.

1985 Senior Engineer then Principal Engineer with Oscar Faber Consulting Engineers. Involved in managing a number of multidisciplinary design projects from inception, through design, tendering and installation to project completion. Electrical and lighting design for the ICI Headquarters and the Express Newspapers Building. Lighting Design for the Chapel Royal, Hampton Court; Divinity School, Oxford University; Athenaeum Club, London.

1983 Lighting Designer with Steensen Varming Mulcahy and Partners. Daylight and artificial lighting design for the National Gallery extension scheme, New British Library and for offices for British Telecom, W H Smith and STC. Advised on lighting aspects for the Clore Gallery at the Tate and the Whitechapel Gallery.

1981 Assistant Engineer then Project Engineer with Oscar Faber Consulting Engineers. Complete electrical and lighting design of Cairo Barclays International Bank and pharmaceutical research and manufacturing facility for Napp Laboratories. Lighting design for Duveen Gallery, British Museum.

1978 Joined Ove Arup & Partners in London. Followed a two year graduate training programme including four months secondment to electrical contractor to learn about the problems of estimating, site installation and commissioning and four months secondment to Thorn Lighting to cover product development, laboratory testing, lamp technology and manufacture. Involved in the lighting design for the Plymouth Theatre Royal and the Tuan Wan railway depot in Hong Kong.

1978 Graduated with an Honours degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from Nottingham University.

Awards received:

2014 President’s Medal of the Society of Light & Lighting.

The 2004 Lighting Award from the Society of Light & Lighting for services to the lighting profession.

Winner, National Lighting Award for the lighting of Waddesdon Manor, Buckinghamshire.

Highly Commended, National Lighting Award for lighting of Bishop Grosseteste College Chapel.

Commended, National Lighting Award for the lighting of The Wallace Collection.
